5 Reasons to Encourage Your Children to Collect Collectibles

Most collectors of collectibles either first started to collect their collectibles when they were young or collect an item that they enjoyed as children.  The simple fact is, collecting collectibles can be a good way to keep a hold on our childhood.  But, here are 5 other reasons why you should encourage your children to collect collectibles.

1.         History
Collecting a collectible is a great way to teach your children some history.  Not only does it give you the opportunity to teach them about the history of the topic they are collecting, but you can also learn about the history of the latest individual item your child has just acquired for their collection when you check out its providence.  For example, if you encourage your child to collect stamps, not only can you enjoy collecting the stamps themselves but you also have the chance to teach them something about the life and times when the stamp was issued.  Moreover, if you collect stamps from different parts of the world, you can also look at how people around the world lived differently.  Doing comparisons of life then and now is also a great game to play with your child while collecting.

2.         Knowledge
Collecting anything means you have to learn about the item you are collecting.  As such, encouraging your child to become a collector of collectibles is also a great way for them to learn about something important, without being faced with the boredom of only reading from books.  This way they can learn while having fun!  What’s more, because your children will learn how to research their chosen topic, they also benefit from learning how to do this research and how to use the internet to find out something they need to know.  They can then use this information and transfer the skills they learn to other subjects they are learning at school.  All of which should make your child into a more responsible student!

3.         Experience
How many times can you look at the teddy-bear in your bedroom and recall where you were when you got it, who you where with, and what was going on.  Fact is that collecting collectibles is a great way to keep a hold of our memories.  Indeed, it would not be too far fetched to say that a collection is like a living history of both the things being collected and the person who is collecting the thing.  Simply put, there can be far fewer more rewarding experiences than collecting a collectible.

4.         Value
The amount of times I’ve seen something being sold at auction on eBay and thought to myself: “I remember having one of those when I was a child.  Wonder what happened to it?” is unreal.  While you don’t necessarily want your child to hoard everything from their childhood, if you and your child enjoy collecting something together during their childhood then there is a very good chance that by the time they reach their mid to late 30s the item you were collecting for all those years will be worth something.  Although the value of the collection may not be the primary reason why you want to start the collection, the fact that you are collecting something could turn out to have been a really enjoyable way of creating something of real economic value one day!

5.         Fun
Above all else, collecting is fun!  You don’t necessarily need to know all the ins-and-outs of what it is you are collecting.  It can be as simple as being an outlet for you and your child to spend many hours in each others company as you go from place to place looking for new items to add to their collection.  In short, the recalling the times you and your child spent collecting collectibles will one day become one of your fondest memories!
