Feldspar family
Feldspar family: Sunstone, Spectrolite, LabradoriteAll three of these curious gems are different variations of the same gem-family; differing in color and quality but comparable for their shimmering quality. Found in the U.S ( Oregon ), Sunstone is an iridescent flame colored gem that shimmers from red to orange hues and is becoming increasingly popular with the jewelry designers today. It is found in both transparent and opaque forms; the former usually cut in faceted style and the latter cut cabochon style to better allow light through its ‘strips'. It is remarkable for its colors and the warm, reflective patina that allows it to mirror light beautifully. The price range for sunstone is about $70-$2500 per carat for good quality stone of under 1 carat weight. Larger weights, up to 5 carat gems may cost a little more; about $150-$2500 per carat.
Spectrolite is found in Finland , and it differs from the Sunstone in color, exhibiting the same iridescent qualities but in blue, green and purple hues, much like a peacocks feathers. It is normally cut cabochon style. The third gem, Labradorite, is less spectacular than the first two, but is still very lovely. It is a dark, opaque gem that ranges in color from the typical blue to the green, yellow and orange shades and the very rare purple. It often displays a flash of color if tuned at certain angles to the light. This effect is called ‘labradorescence'. It is normally cut cabochon style. Labradorite is reasonably priced at about $10-$100 per carat for anything smaller than a full 1 carat gem.
