Ivory is not a gem, but the material taken from animal teeth. It is usually taken from elephants, whales, wild boars, sea lions and walruses. It is illegal in most of the world and considered a barbaric tradition. Many species of mammals have become extinct or come very near extinction because of ivory hunters The main sources are Zaire and Africa, though ivory is also taken from India , Thailand , Sri Lanka , Kenya and Senegal
