Moonstone (Feldpsar)
Moonstone is another member of the illustrious feldspar gem family and it's famous for being the symbolic stone of lovers and giving its wearer the ability to foretell the future. It's famous for the floating light effect it has that is called ‘adularescence' and if cut cabochon style with a very high dome it displays an effect very much like a cat's-eye. Its rated 6.5 on the Moh scale and can be seen in two varieties- the finer (and more expensive), blue-colored gem that is mostly clear but for the silvery line running through it. This kind of moonstone can range up to $100 per carat. The second, less expensive kind is a semi-translucent, milky-white variety that shows a glittering blue or white line through its middle when you hold it to the light. This may be price from as little as $5 per carat. The sheer iridescence of the stone makes it difficult to copy and so very few good imitations of moonstones circulate the market, and this is generally an all-time favorite in the U.S. The standard price range is $20-$200 per carat for anything smaller than 5 carat weight and $40-$200 for anything larger than that, depending on quality.
