Spessartine (Garnet)

A lovely yellowish-orange type of garnet that is found in many countries, among which are Brazil, Afghanistan, Madagascar, Burma, East Africa, Sri Lanka, Namibia, Kashmir and California. It is clear with darker undertones and the most prized spessartines are a dark yellow or pale orange with darker red undertones that deepen its hue. It varies wildly in price depending on quality, priced for as little as a few dollars per carat weight for poor clarity grade gems, about $10-$100 per carat for anything smaller than 5 carat weight and about $40-$250 per carat for 5-30 carat weights.Very fine spessartines have recently been fund in Namibia are called “Mandarin garnets” and those found in Kashmir are often called “Kashmirine”. This stone is sometimes confused with hessonite garnets or expensive yellow topaz.
