This opaque African gem is relatively new in the market, since being discovered only in the 1970's by a Japanese petrologist named Ken-ichi Sugi. It is either red with purple undertones or purple with red undertones and it is sometimes called ‘Royal Lavulite' or ‘Royal Azel'. It is carved or cut into miniature reliefs or cut cabochon style for beads and necklaces.
