Synthetic Gems

A synthetic gem , on the other hand, is specifically made with the same ingredients that a real gem is made of. Synthetic gems [such as rubies, sapphires, emeralds and spinels] are lab-produced to have the same physical properties as a real gem and are far more difficult to distinguish from the originals. The “lab-grown” synthetic types of gems that are now beginning to be available on the market aren't very popular as yet, because the production process is laborious and expensive, making them unviable for mass-production. Even so, labs today can artificially create beautiful reproductions of gems, and despite being expensive, they are still far less costly and rare than any original you may be after. Again, this is the sole reason you should send the gem to testing before buying it, so as not to make a costly mistake. You will not be able to ascertain whether a gem is a well-made synthetic with a loupe. The sale of synthetics is problematic in many regards, as some synthetics are of such fine quality that even reputable jewelers are mislead into buying them. Some jewelers are thus duped and unintentionally sell them without proper identification, with no inkling of criminal intent on their part. Technology has become such an innovative machine that new kinds of processes are introduced to the market at a rate that the common jeweler can barely keep up with. Only a current, reputable testing lab can allay your fears completely in this regard.
